Inside Line Promotions – CANTON, Ill. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Kyle Schuett battled challenges on both nights to post a pair of top-20 finishes with the Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Car Series last weekend in Illinois.
Schuett’s racing weekend began Friday night at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, where he charged from eighth to fourth in his heat race to earn the 10th starting position in the A Main.
“I ran into the guy in front of me on the second lap of the feature and bent the right front a bit, which kept the torsion bar from moving freely,” he said. “After that the car didn’t drive well. I was running around 11th or 12th when I got into the slick a little bit, looped it and had to restart in the back. After that I just tried to keep my nose clean. I was still able to pass a few more cars and a couple of others dropped out so I finished 12th.
“It was definitely disappointing since we generally do well at Jacksonville. I don’t think we had finished outside of the top 10 there before Friday.”
Schuett and his crew made repairs to the race car and followed the MOWA Series to its next race on Saturday at Spoon River Speedway, where they started fifth in a heat race.
“I was able to get by the fourth-place car, but by that time the top three were about a straightaway ahead,” he said. “I ran down the third-place car, but came up a couple of inches short of passing him at the checkered.”
Those inches forced Schuett to start deeper in the A Main. He rolled off 15th.
“The A Main was single-file around the bottom from the start of the race,” he said. “I ran around 13th to 15th for a while in a group of about five cars. Our car was decent, but it wasn’t quite good enough to get around the others.
“I eventually got tired of following the others so I decided to try the top with about 10 laps to go. I’m not real good at running the top at a big track and I missed it in one corner and about three guys went by me on the bottom. After that, I just searched around for a way to get back around them and was able to pass one of them and finished 18th. I probably should’ve just stayed in line and finished where I was, but I wanted to try something different.”
Schuett is looking forward to his next race at Jacksonville Speedway on Sept. 25. It will be his first competition with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
“I have no idea how we’ll fare against the Outlaws,” he said. “Our focus will be to run all our laps that night. Our ultimate goal is to make the feature, but our chances for that are slim since we expect a lot of good cars there. One thing we have going for us is that we have a lot of laps at Jacksonville. But it’s still only my 14th race in a sprint car and it will just be the fifth time I’ve run time trials. It will be a challenge, that’s for sure.”
