Inside Line Promotions – GRANITE CITY, Ill. (April 15, 2019) – Kyle Schuett recorded another eye-catching finish in his brief 410ci winged sprint car racing career with a top-five run Friday night at Tri-City Speedway with the Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Car Series.

The achievement came in just the third night of sprint car competition for Schuett, who raced midgets and micro sprints prior to this year.

“We certainly exceeded our expectations,” said Schuett, who finished fifth after starting 18th. “We thought we’d do pretty well, but we weren’t expecting a top five by our third race.”

The evening didn’t begin well for Schuett and his team as they battled engine woes during hot laps and their heat race.

“The motor was misfiring a bit in hot laps,” he said. “We thought it was popping because it was running lean so we threw some more fuel at it for the heat race and it became worse. I ended up pulling in during the heat.

“We had trouble with the mag moving the weekend before and we got it set during the week. We discovered it had moved again during hot laps and the heat race. We were able to reset the mag again and time the engine before the feature.”

Schuett’s DNF in his heat race forced him to start 18th in the night’s main event, leading to a reasonable goal for the feature.

“I was just hoping that the motor would run well in the feature,” he said. “I just wanted to get some laps in. The track was a little rough and I was mainly concerned about getting through the bumps without getting caught up with another car.”

Schuett was quickly able to pass a number of cars. Along with attrition, he soon found himself in the top 10.

“We got up to around 12th or 13th and then a few guys fell out and we were around eighth,” he said. “I thought that was about where he would finish. But then we had a restart with about three laps to go. The leader ran out of fuel when the race restarted and the field kind of stacked up behind him. I was able to get around several cars when that happened and moved to fifth, which is where I finished.”

Schuett was pleased with his result and acknowledged the role that good fortune played.

“Luck certainly helped a bit,” he said. “We just took our time, avoided the wrecks and it played out in our favor. I was just happy with the way our car ran in the feature after the way our night started.

“Our goals for now remain the same. We’re not going to get greedy and expect a top-three finish in our next race. Our goals each night are still to make the A Main and run all the laps.”

Schuett’s early season momentum will be put on hold for a bit as the next MOWA Series race won’t be until May 18. The open weeks in the schedule actually fit well with his personal life.

“My last exam to become a CPA is on May 14 so I’ll be studying a lot between now and then,” he said. “I’d love to race with the World of Outlaws at Jacksonville and Pevely, but I think it’s better that I get more seat time before racing with them or the All Stars. Once I pass my final exam we can race every weekend.”
